What to Pack

The average daily high temperature in New Orleans in August is approximately 90 degrees, while the average low temperature is 73 degrees.  Being averages, it means that the range for actual temperatures may be even greater.  Be sure to have light, breathable fabrics for during the day, but to also carry a sweater or lightweight jacket for the air-conditioned meeting rooms.  Dressing in layers works best in the evening, to be prepared for temperature drops in the late afternoon/early evening hours.

Rain is always a possibility, so having an umbrella handy is also recommended.

Below is suggested attire for each type of event being held at the Global Conference.  Please use these guidelines when planning what clothes to pack for your trip to New Orleans.

  • A spare pair of glasses or contact lenses, or a copy of your prescription.
  • Prescription medications.  Be sure to bring enough to last your entire trip, or prescription re-fill orders.  Keep prescription medicine in hand-carried items in the event you experience a delay in getting your checked bags.
  • Readily accessible medical information, including your doctor's name and contact information, as well as any necessary insurance cards.
  • Remember, due to new security rules, your checked luggage cannot be locked.  However, it is good practice to lock any luggage once checked into the hotel.  Keep the luggage keys with you at all times.
  • For current information from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) on permitted and prohibited items, click here
  • Leave a copy of your itinerary, hotel name, address and telephone number, and the event schedule with a friend or relative.

Travel Safety

New Orleans, like most large cities, is generally safe but not immune from criminal activity.  We want to do our best to ensure that all attendees have as enjoyable and safe an experience as possible while visiting, and thus offer these suggestions in an effort to keep you informed and remind you of potentially unsafe situations.

Sightseeing

  • Plan your route in advance; consult maps before leaving your hotel.
  • If you get lost, ask directions from service providers such as hotel desk staff or police or traffic officers, or find an open business and ask directions inside.  Avoid asking strangers on the street whenever possible.
  • If possible, locate in advance places on your route where you can go for help if necessary.
  • Be aware of your surroundings; leave an area if it appears unsafe.
